We are ! Well, that depends actually.

If you don't understand the way in which google works, its dead easy to get to #1.

You just make the search string (the bit you type into Google) as specific as possible. For example "leaflets marketing your small business leeds" will get our website to #1. But the question is, is that what your customers will type?

This depends on what it is they're looking for. So if they're looking for marketing for small business in leeds, perhaps they'll type "small business marketing leeds" - whereby, as it happens, we come up #2 and #3.

Incidentally, #1 is freeindex.co.uk - a website you can upload your business to, and of course it can get you to the top of the rankings, as it has done for our Marketing Your Small Business Website.

The problem is, your customers likely wont be typing long search strings into Google. They'll be typing more specific strings like "Marketing Leeds".

Interestingly, we're still on the first page of Google, and thats through lots of reciprocal links, and working on our keywords. By doing this, we've brought our marketing costs right down. And thats the main point. The internet is great, we use it everyday and we're lost when our connection goes down. But if you have a fantastic website, and no-one can find the thing, then its a waste of time. Sure, it can be used to reinforce your organisation when you hand out a business card, but the main point of a website is that it should be found constantly, by people who are specifically looking at your product or service. Ideally, you also want it to pop up when folks are not looking for your product or service, as a small percentage of these may stop and buy something anyway. I know I have bought in this way. Of course these numbers will be small, but if you have hundreds of thousands of visitors, then your sales are going to increase. If you only have a few hundred, then you're going to find it difficult to sell anything.

Now. Be wary of companies that promise you first page rankings, as we've seen, its easier the longer the search string is. So will the company offering you this service, do they mean a long search string, or a more general search string?

The other point to mention, is that by using other peoples websites, such as freeindex.co.uk, and there are many other websites out there you can use, then you can also increase your presence on the internet without it costing you a penny. The only thing it costs you is your time. Now, to be honest, I'd say my time is pretty valuable, but I certainly remember sat with my laptop on my knee in the lounge during the evening submitting my company details to as many different websites as possible, some of which will provide a return link back to my own site.

You can always pay someone else to do that too of course, depending on your level of knowledge. But a little bit of knowledge on this will go a long way in this internet age.
